Bach’s Air was the first piece by Bach that was recorded. It was recorded by the Russian cellist Aleksandr Verzhbilovich and an unknown pianist, in 1902 (as the Air from the Overture No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068 originally set for string quartet). It is a wedding favorite, and much loved piece. I have added the distinctive bass line in pizzicato as an introduction to the piece to set the feel. The first bar is usually a long note, but to create the sense of the constantly moving harmony I have added the harmony line moving down in double stops. This is played as smoothly as possible to create the timeless sense of the melody line.
The melody moves between octaves to utilize open string harmonies and lift the dynamics and intensity where needed.
I have kept it in the original key of D major (and not the C major version for which it got its name Air on a G string) You will enjoy playing this gem in its new and flattering setting!
