Erster Verlust

Erster Verlust Op. 5 No. 4 by Schubert, is a beautiful song that perfectly suits the cello's sonority and is a gem of a program piece.

The poignant poem 'First Loss' by Goethe was set to music by Schubert. The cello version uses Schubert’s original key of F minor. This presents technical challenges, due to the four flats, which make it an excellent practice for working in flat keys. There is warmth and sadness inherent in F minor which creates depth in this emotive cello solo. A smooth, vocal-like piece.
