Erster Verlust

Erster Verlust Op. 5 No. 4 by Schubert, is a beautiful song that perfectly suits the cello's sonority and is a gem of a program piece.

The poignant poem 'First Love' about the first days of love by Goethe was set to music by Schubert. The cello version maintains Schubert’s original key of F minor. This presents technical challenges, due to the four flats, so is an excellent practice for working in flat keys. There is warmth and sadness inherent in F minor which creates an emotive cello solo. A smooth, vocal-like piece.
