Macushla for Solo Cello

This is a beautiful and sentimental piece written around 1910. My grandmother was from Limerick and moved to Australia in her late teens. She used to play a florid and romantic version of this on the piano, with various improvised interpretations. It always brought a tear to her eye (and then to mine), and reminded her of a home she left so long ago. I have arranged this with her playing in my ear. This song was famously sung by tenor John McCormack and used in the historical film Michael Collins. Macushla is the English verion of Mo Chuisle and means 'my pulse', from the original saying "A chuisle mo chroí" or "Pulse of my heart", and in the context of this song is a term of endearment. A lovely piece to play for your nan!
