Musetta’s Waltz by Giacomo Puccini from the opera La Boheme
In Italian "Quando me'n vo"
A strongly romantic piece of music from one of Puccini’s most famous operas. It was his fourth opera and premiered in 1896. Set in the Bohemian Latin Quarter of Paris in 1830, based on a novel by French writer Henry Merger, it follows four young bohemians in Paris. During this song, Musetta's Waltz, the character Musetta tries to make her wealthy elderly lover who she has fallen out of love with, jealous by singing to her poverty stricken ex lover. The opera ends rather tragically!
The solo cello version expresses the beauty and intensity of the opera and is a powerful journey through a wide range of emotions and tonalities.
The harmonic structure of the orchestral part is integral to the music and supports the elegance and warmth of the vocal line. The harmonies are reduced as much as possible to make it playable as a solo piece, yet the double stops and implied harmonies outline enough to retain the integrity of Pucinni's original composition. Includes double stops, octave double stops, pizzicato and high positions, and is for the Intermediate to Advanced player.
English Lyrics
When I walk alone in the street
People stop and stare at me
And everyone looks at my beauty,
Looks at me,
From head to foot...
And then I relish the sly yearning
which escapes from their eyes
and which is able to perceive
my most hidden beauties.
Thus the scent of desire is all around me,
and it makes me happy, makes me happy!
And you who know, who remember and yearn
Do you shrink from me?
I know it very well:
you do not want to express your anguish,
I know so well that you do not want to express it
but you feel as if you are dying!
