The Coolin is also known as The Fair Headed Girl, from the Irish text to the tune An Chúileann.
It was played in the Irish Harp repertoire from as early as the 1700s, and may have originated in the 13th century. It has a beautiful flowing melody and this version uses variations to develop the melody, spanning from the mid range to thumb position and down to a deeper section on the C string. This air works beautfully in concert and is impressive with its flourishes across the range of the cello.
All aspects of the articulations and finger choices can be explored and changed. Slow airs and laments are a great way to help find a new approach to playing cello.
Intermediate to Advanced players.
